Here’s a little about the flick:
While based on true events, some of the particulars were changed for the film. The actual debate was between Wiley College and the University of Southern California’s debate team (not Harvard’s) and took place on the USC campus in Bovard auditorium. In addition, according to the New York Times the “film omits one reality: even though they beat the reigning champions, the Great Debaters were not allowed to call themselves victors because they did not belong to the debate society, which did not allow blacks until after World War II.” The movie also explores the social milieu of the American South during the Great Depression including not only the day to day insults and slights African Americans had to endure, but also a near lynching. James L. Farmer, Jr. (played by Denzel Whitaker), who was on Wileys’ debate team at 14 years old after completing high school (and who would later go on to co-found the Congress of Racial Equality) is also depicted. A drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College Texas. In 1935, he inspired students to form the school’s first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship.
