“The directing lineup came entirely from dramatic films, with Affleck, Bigelow, Lee, Spielberg and Tarantino all in the running.”[HP]
And the awards season is off! The nominations for The Golden Globes were announced this morning and no surprise here: Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln is in the lead with seven nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
Ben Affleck’s much acclaimed Argo and Traantino’s Django Unchained also did nicely among the nominees, with both winning nominations for Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (Alan Arkin in Argo and Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained).
The big snub that everyone is talking about is how major movies like The Hobbit, The Beasts of the Southern Wild and Magic Mike didn’t earn a single nomination, as well as previous darling Mad Men being completely shut out this time.
As for sure bets, most observers are saying that Anne Hathaway is the one to watch for her (we hear) heart rending performance in Les Miserables. The Oscar drumbeats and have begun, and they sound curiously like Jean Valjean.
