Obviously, we’re still waiting for the leaked photo! More importantly, how many more people need to die before they change the gun laws in our great nation?! Latest shooting included 28 people, of which 20 were children. R.I.P. I can’t imagine what the parents are going through right now…

Its things like this happening that makes me think it would be for the best if 2012 is the year that the world ends, we are a horrible race and don't deserve the planet we live on!

Restrict access to guns and shit like that will happen less often. It's that simple.

China and Japan have recently had massacres of children using knives.  So why the focus on guns?  More than anything, I think it's an issue with society and humans in general, we suppress and ridicule empathy.  And secondly, the way we handle mental health issues (which is to not provide free treatment for those who cannot afford it, and for those who can, just pump them full of pharmaceuticals).Incidentally, one of the main reasons I refused to vote for Obama was his killing of innocent children with drones -- 200 in Pakistan alone.  Two national candidates opposed it, they didn't even get 2% of the vote combined.  We only pretend to detest violence.  We support it and embrace it in so many ways.

Why would an elementary school teacher who has a troubled son need to own four guns?

How come people look at children in the face and then shoot them. This is very very sad.

A child's life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness trumps the 2nd amendment.

That is the lowest form of cowardness I can think of...I mean if some nut plans to kill himself, fine...it's his life, but damned it..killing innocent children is the lowest thing they can do....I feel so sorry for those parents, and the rest of their families..

I guess we're in some sort of epidemic of crazy people, first that one at the mall, and now these in a matter of days..what is the world comming to? Rest In Peace children, and may God help and support all those afflicted by these stupid tragedy...

It also sucks that someone in the media used pictures and linked to the facebook profile for the wrong Ryan Lanza. Oops.

Already in a mini-argument, so I will cut/paste my thoughts into here. The 2nd amendment is an outdated concept. The bigger and better technology becomes, the bigger the difference between the govt's weaponry and citizens. We would be absolutely crushed. All the guns would just mean we are crushed a little less.

I agree that gun control and laws in current forms won't do a thing. There's no point arguing for/against more laws because it is American culture that is somewhat broken.  It's the supply that must be controlled. They are just too easily available to anyone/everyone. And yes, it is about the gun. Just look at stopping power, magazine size, and shots per second. The more times you have to reload or shoot your target means a higher probability you are stopped. This is the number one thing learned in every shooting video game. Which btw do not cause more people to be violent or else China/Korea/Japan/Europe would have way more crime. As well as TV/movies, hello Hentai. Video games are like big money sports over there. PS-In Japan this year, 11 deaths by firearms. 11 for an entire country!!!

It's news for ratings/clicks. Media will always jump on it. All the analysis is for more views/hits. But unfortunately in our short attention span world, this will be forgotten by most sometime after the weekend, a drop in the bucket. You would need a tipping point event at least 5-10x stronger before the needle budges. (don't worry Moe, I don't blame you. That is just how media works and how people get information).

Sorry Moe but making gun laws stricter will not stop mentally insane people from killing. This is just shit that's bound to happen, Mexico has strict gun laws and look how well thats working for them.

I can't believe CNN initially named Adam Lanza's older brother Ryan Lanza as the shooter. Sucks for him...

WeeItsNookies

@FabianoCruz No it wouldn't. Look at history, people killed people long before guns. Laws affect thepeople who live by the rules of society already. The people who don't live by those rules are called criminals, whether they have a gun or not. It is a naive belief that gun control, controls criminals. We have too many guns and too many armed civilians. We have always had an easy access to guns and there has always been a fuck ton of guns. But yet mass public shootings is a recent occurance. SOMETHING has changed, and it has nothing to do with the guns. Could it be the media sensationalizing and glamoring the shooters? Making them famous? Did this guy go into the school with the thought of "Yup, ima one up that VT guy and shoot a bunch of children, I'll be famous"? Unless you take away every single reason why someone would want to kill, people will find a way to do it with or without a gun. Give me $30.00 bucks and I'll go to homedepot and get everything needed to make a bomb, a bomb that will do more destruction than an inexperienced shooter with adrenaline pumping to the point he can't think straight. A simple bomb to make is a pipebomb. Grab a PVC pipe, go to the firework store and get FUCK TONS of sparklers, crush the sparklers up into a power, get ball bearings (metal balls) fill up the PVC pipe, screw on end caps and tada you have a deadly pipebomb that will kill more people than some idiot with a gun. Trust me, you don't want to ban guns then have people resorting to making BOMBS. People become too irrational when they get emotional. Of course you're having every brain dead bandwagon hopping idiot going "ZOMG BAN GUNS" being completely oblivious to the numbers. There's 305 million people in this nation. An estimated 250-300 million guns. Almost half the population owns a gun. Over the course of 25 years we have had 7 mass public shootings that made national media attention. Consisting of 9 men total. So in 25 years, with the amount of guns we have this has happened shy of a dozen times. 9 people out of the 90+ MILLION gun owners have used their guns to do harm. Literally like .00001% of the gun owner population has went on a shooting spree, but yet we should take guns away from the millions upon millions of law abiding citizens just because the actions of a few? Give me a break. That is simply being irrational. There's always knives, crossbows(which could possibly kill even more people, Look at how badass the Green Arrow is duh), bombs, cars, etc. With the amount of people, armed people and guns we have, we only have on average 10,000 deaths per year as a result of gun crime. THE MAJORITY of that is gang violence related. People living in inner cities (ghettos) account for the MAJORITY of our overall crime statistics. Being poverty stricken = Bad education. Poor education + Poverty = Crime. So realistically we're looking at maybe half of that. Deaths on ILLEGAL drug overdoses surpass that. Deaths from getting hit by a DUI rivals that. Doctors kill 5,000 people a year due to accidents. A child is 12 times more likely to die by a car than he is a gun. The people who are against guns basically just show they lack the very basic concept of math. That one number is small, one number is big.

@Planet Nebo  maybe if they had school safety there  that carried guns they could of killed this douche before he could kill 20 kids. the guns didn't kill them the person behind them did! with out legal guns there will only be more illegal guns and all the wrong people with them and no one to protect anyone from those people think about it

@Gabbo [the bigger the difference between the govt's weaponry and citizens. We would be absolutely crushed] Then why are things going so poorly in Afghanistan?  We've been there 11 years.  Don't underestimate the power of guerilla warfare.  I understand the need to look for solutions, but don't be complacent about the significance and importance of the Second Amendment.

McP
McP

@bryanzee Indeed.  See Japan and China and their recent knife massacres of children.  Meanwhile gun ownership is virtually mandatory in Switzerland, yet they have little gun violence (most of their gun deaths are suicides).  It's not about the guns.

MoeJackson

@bryanzee

It's definitely a mixed bag

Experimenting with increased regulation wouldn't hurt, but I'm not a gun owner so I don't have the attachment that a lot of peeps have.

@TaylorHernandez @Planet Nebo It's sad that we live in a society where school children need to be protected by armed guards while they are in school. Maybe I'm a dreamer, but I would like to live in a society where there were no guns. These types of mass murders with guns have become more common and something has to be done.

Gabbo

@McP  They could be better, but our military isn't the part at fault. Our government doesn't want to be seen as aggressors and we tippy toe around alot, so we don't flatten towns or hillsides or use overwhelming firepower. And we're still there because the govt and leftovers would be destabilized as soon as we left. It's an unwinnable war because we're trying to let someone else win. The same with Iraq.

All guerrilla warfare does is slow us down. There are still dead insurgents at a conservative rate of 8-10 of their guys for every one of ours in battles. Considering it's their turf with the element of surprise, with a numerical advantage, they usually have the high ground, and we sort of attempt to keep civilian deaths down, this is an amazing ratio.

When our guys go on the offensive, they crush opposition. Both Iraq and Afghan invasions, enemy troops took 200-250 dead guys for every one guy on our side. Guess that shows the power of the air force and navy though.

Gabbo
Gabbo

@MoeJackson @Gabbo Sadly amusing. The shooter wasn't even Ryan Lanza, but his brother Adam.

People can kill with any tool. It's that other tools take way longer to kill with. Simply put, assault rifles>>handguns>>knife>rock>hands. You cannot stop all the crazy people from killing others, but you can certainly limit the damage

It's economics with guns. The more supply and the more demand means there are more incidents that occur with guns, whether intentionally or unintentionally. While you may be trained, the other problem is that you would be in the minority. I'm going to guess that 80%+ of people who own guns aren't trained. I would bet this shooter stole the guns from his parents and these guns were acquired by the parents legally. Proliferation aids mutually assured destruction

And it is indeed American culture. 80% of all gun related deaths in the 25 richest nations occur here. There are more school shooting deaths in America than every other country in the world COMBINED. More laws will not fix this.

Gabbo
Gabbo

@McP @bryanzee It's mainly the American culture. Gun laws don't work unless there's enforcement. That's the part broken in Mexico. Both Britain and Canada have roughly the same amount of guns per capita as us, yet Britain is 10x and Canada is 25x less likely to have crimes involving guns committed against you. So the answer is they have nicer people?

@MoeJackson @WeeItsNookies @McP I might know partly what is happening. I usually hit shift+enter to BR the lines. However, it doesn't line return like it should. It forces me to use enter to start a new paragraph.

@McP @WeeItsNookies I did, this site blows. I actually had that in 5 paragraphs but whenever posting it put it into one giant paragraph. Funny that moe liked your comment when he is at fault for it to begin with. :P

Gabbo

@McP @Gabbo Deterrent? Our government, police, and corporations abuse us daily already. The only thing slowing them down is each other, not citizens. Also, just not at a point where most people care. And foreign invaders? Who's going to invade the US? Only something catastrophic like aliens, zombies, and skynet. No other nation on the planet will get past our navy/air force.

Uh yeah, anything not of value to the military will get bombed if it was ever citizens vs US military. Tunisia is at the bottom in firearms per capita just overthrew its government. Egypt near the bottom also overthrew their government. I'm not saying get rid of 2nd amendment, I'm saying it needs to be fixed because the current model is broken and has been for years.

McP
McP

@Gabbo @McP But slowing down/making things difficult can be a significant deterrent and check on government abuses domestically and foreign invaders.  Yes the US government could drop bombs on its own people and towns to "crush" them, but is that really how you'd expect it to play out?  There are also concerns about an epidemic and culture of police abuses against the citizenry that could be (and should be) checked with those who keep firearms pursuant to the 2nd Amendment.

Not to mention, I should have, and do have, the natural and constitutional rights of self defense in the face of threat from other private citizens.
