“MTV says the fivesome is “the clear choice for the top spot” after a year that included two No. 1 albums, hits such as “What Makes You Beautiful” and a sold-out world tour.”[HP]
No, we’re not dumping on them just because they’re an obnoxiously cute boy band from the UK. But, really MTV? Your Artist of the Year is One Direction? Guess we know which direction you’re headed in.
After two chart topping albums, millions of screaming teenage fans (and we assume some of their moms as well), a spot on Barbara Walters’s now meaningless 10 Most Fascinating People of the Year list, and a superhit song about telling an ugly girl she’s beautiful, One Direction now claims the mantle of being the most honored musical act by what was once the authority on pop musical entertainment.
In further ironic news, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” was named Song of the Year. (If this doesn’t get David Geffen to beg Joni Mitchell to make another studio album . . .)
