Spike Lee: “Django Unchained” Is Disrespectful to Slaves

010512-celebs-spike-lee-obama-fundraiser

“I can’t speak on it ’cause I’m not gonna see it. All I’m going to say is that it’s disrespectful to my ancestors. That’s just me… I’m not speaking on behalf of anybody else.”[THR]

Director Spike Lee minced no words when he spoke out yesterday against the Christmas release Django Unchained from Quentin Tarantino. Calling the film “disrespectful”, he publicly shamed the movie for turning a “holocaust” into a “Spaghetti Western”.

He tweeted that, “American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western.It Was A Holocaust.My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them.”

Earlier, he also told Vibe that he had little to say about Django because “I can’t speak on it ’cause I’m not gonna see it. All I’m going to say is that it’s disrespectful to my ancestors. That’s just me… I’m not speaking on behalf of anybody else.”

Depending upon how the film is received by audiences and critics (it’s currently 90% on RottenTomatoes), you can be assured that there will be no shortage of opinions on Django Unchained. And this doesn’t even take into account the debate over Hollywood glamorizing violence in the wake of the Newtown school shooting tragedy.

Tell us what you think: is Spike Lee right? Or is a movie just a movie?

This is pretty much the same with people who are trying to attack movie Zero Dark Thirty for glorifying torture even though they haven't seen the movie and don't know what's inside the movie yet. what the hell, Spike Lee.

This stupid monkey is at it again. a) Quentin is by far a better director than him. His movies will always be crushed by him. B) He's by far more racist than the people and shit he calls racist. C) He tweeted the WRONG address out with the sole intention of causing harm to a person without any fucking evidence at all. Now this moron is judging a movie he won't even see? Someone should put this idiot back in chains.

"My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa." Is he aware that blacks would actually sell their own people into slavery to save their own asses?

Being black is not a requirement to make a movie about anything slavery related. Is he mad the white devils keep making better movies about blacks than blacks themselves?

Doesn't he have something to do?  Like tweet a wrong address while trying to get someone assassinated?

ol Spike " Chip On My Shoulder" Lee

I think a lot of the hate is coming from not being even a fraction of a Director that Quentin is. Someone call Reggie Miller so he can choke Spike Lee and shut him up.

thanks a lot Spike #1 for an uninformed opinion, #2 for inviting the racists on the site to go nuts

How can you comment on a piece work without actually seeing it? I don't get it.

@WeeItsNookies you are calling blacks monkeys yet claim whites are trustworthy storytellers to capture the black experience?

You are not better than Spike. He is an egomaniac with a microphone. You are a cretin with a keyboard.

@skilligan

the dude doesn't think. It's a weird online personality. he's cool on some posts, but a blatant racist on others. Why would a stupid site like ours attract racist conservatives?!

@MoeJackson That's just BS. You mocked that Vietnamese PhD student who was murdered at Yale. She was an innocent girl who didn't hurt anyone. Where's the thick line there? So it's wrong for Nookies to call black people monkeys BECAUSE IT OFFENDS YOU, but it's okay for you to mock a girl who was brutally murdered BECAUSE IT DOESN'T OFFEND YOU. That's just hypocrisy. No, I don't think it's all right to call black people monkeys, just like I don't think it's all right to mock girls who were murdered in cold blood.

@OG

So poking fun at Vietnamese nail salon workers is the same as calling all black people monkeys? I guess in my mind, I give 500 years of slavery a slight edge when it comes to racist attacks.

Having said that, I still feel sorry for the French occupation of Vietnam, as well as the U.S.'s ruthless bombing & murdering of millions during the Vietnam War, but hey there's a THICK line between humor & straight up racist attacks.

Gonna end it there.

@MoeJackson Come on, man. I've been a visitor at this site for a long time, and I still remember the racist comments the admins made about Vietnamese people. Now this bothers you? LOL.

wrong idiot, in a movie about slavery it would be strange to not have the n word, here there should be no racist remarks

@skilligan @bryanzee

You can't pick and choose when to be offended, you're either okay with it or not. Here you are okay with this movie, and you turn around and get offended when Nookies refers to Spike as a monkey. And it seems like you're not bright enough to realize Nookies is joking, I would expect the 100+ N words dropped in this movie would offend you a lot more than words from a user on this site.

Its only racist if you let it. Seems like Spike might not have an uninformed opinion after all..
