“Zero Dark Thirty made $17.6 million across 2,946 theaters. The Jessica Chastain movie has made $55.9 million to date.”[HP]
Here’s something you don’t often see in the business of American Movie Going: the two top spots at the North American box-office belonging to a Hollywood actress that has the starring role in both pictures.
Jessica Chastain, who won a Golden Globe last week for her performance in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty and is nominated for an Oscar for the same performance next month, took the top slot at the box office this weekend with her new horror thriller Mama. Produced by Guillermo del Toro, Mama earned a better-than-expected $28.1 million.
In second place was the Chastain-Bigelow reenactment of the hunt for bin Laden, Zero Dark Thirty, which has been raking in the big bucks in wide release, despite much of the criticism that the film white washes history and presents torture as essential in the hunt and murder of the world’s most wanted man. The movie added $17.6 million to its domestic kitty this weekend, bringing its overall haul to $55.9 million.
Third, fourth, and fifth place went to Silver Linings Playbook, Gangster Squad and the new Mark Wahlberg cop drama Broken City. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new film, The Last Stand bombed in its debut for a tenth place finish with just $6.3 million.
It’s time to say hasta la vista, Governator. There’s a new box office champ in town, and her name is Jessica Chastain.
