‘Fruitvale’ Wins Top Prize At Sundance; Definitely A Must-See
I wanted to give “Fruitvale” a shout-out b/c it really looks like it’s gonna be special. The film, which is named after the Fruitvale BART Station where the incident took place, tells the story of 22-year-old S.F. Bay Area resident Oscar Grant & his various experiences on his last day day of life before he was fatally shot by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle. The film isn’t a documentary, but rather a drama written & directed by Richmond, CA-based Ryan Coogler. Even though this is his debut project, the guy scored big dogs like Forest Whitaker to help produce & Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer to star in the film. She plays the role of Oscar Grant’s mother, Wanda Grant.
Here’s a recent interview w/ Ryan Coogler done last week at Sundance by “Democracy Now” host Amy Goodman:
And for those of you who haven’t seen the shooting video, check here:
Ryan Coogler had a wildly successful film festival since his film was reportedly purchased by Harvey Weinstein’s distribution company for a cool $2 million, following a bidding war among other distribution houses. Many congrats to him for entering the Up & Coming Sugar Daddy Community.
