“Melissa McCarthy is one of the funniest actors working today. She is brilliant. Rex Reed is not.”[Source]
In the wake of last week’s bizarrely personal attack on Melissa McCarthy by film critic Rex Reed who termed her a “tractor-sized hippo” and other unmentionables, Hollywood has quickly come to the defense of a woman who is not only universally loved by all who know her and have worked with her, but who is now a bonafide A-list movie star after propelling Identity Thief to the top spot at the box office. Turns out, America loves its funny women, be they tractor sized or not. So suck on that, Reed.
Many of McCarthy’s co-stars and colleagues felt it was time to reciprocate Reed’s disdain with equal contempt and force of social media. Some of the best tweets in defense of America’s newest bonafide movie star:
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig:”For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f— himself.”
Eric Stonestreet: “Turns out, Rex Reed didn’t die sad and alone 10 years ago. Nope. He’s alive and starving for attention, so lets give him some.”
NPR pop culture blogger Linda Holmes: “The thing about Rex Reed is I don’t care.”
Film critic Scott Weinberg: “Is it still offensive to call someone an “old queen”? Because I want to call Rex Reed that but I don’t want to offend anyone except him.”
Lauren Ashley Bishop: “hey rex reed, women aren’t in movies solely for your visual pleasure. you are a pig & a terrible reviewer now that we’re at it”
