Lest you think the title refers to the quality of this movie, let me correct you right here: this is no home run. It’s barely a double. For most of the movie’s duration, you’d think you were banished to the dug out. (Okay, enough with the baseball puns: you get the point).

The story is about an up-and-comer ball player named Cory Brand who seems to be doing everything wrong. He hits what he thinks is a home run, only to learn that the ball actually ended up injuring a young kid in the stands. Ouch. The boy also happens to be his nephew. Double ouch. Then he gets arrested for a DUI. His agent (played by a terrific Vivica A. Fox) admonishes him with: “Next time, why don’t you just shoot Bambi!”

Good question. He ends up enrolling in Alcoholics Anonymous where he reveals that he has had daddy issues that drove him to the bottle…surprise, surprise. A few moments later he’s off reciting the Serenity Prayer and soon things are tidily resolved.

Hip hip . . . hooray?
