“Iron Man 3 — directed by franchise newcomer Shane Black — has a strong shot of joining an elite club of films ultimately grossing $1 billion or more and is another sizeable victory for Marvel and parent company Disney, giving them the top two slots on the list of all-time North American openings as Iron Man 3 beat out the final Harry Potter pic ($169.2 million).”[THR]
It was definitely pre-written in the cinematic sky that this was to be the top entertainment headline of the day: Disney’s Iron Man 3 has shattered box-office records by opening with an astounding $175.3 million opening in North America and an international open of $680.1 million. It seems a virtual foregone conclusion that the film will join the elite Billion Dollar Club of Movies.
For those who are wondering which movie still holds the record for the best opening it is, in fact, The Avengers, which opened with $207.4 million. Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all time and it remains to be seen whether the third Iron Man can manage to come within striking distance to give James Cameron a scare.
If you’re reading this, you probably saw the film this weekend. Thoughts? Complaints? Are you clamoring for a fourth?
