Musical Confessions

The Ganja!
This photo’s purpose is to grab your attention (it succeeded). Marrymejuana is bad. If you see it lying around, burn it in a pipe while inhaling (once you’ve inhaled the smoke, hold your breath for your own safety). (I’m kidding! DRUGS ARE BAD & THEY KILL, but far less than alcohol & heart disease.)

Somehow the ‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ ended up in my car—there are some classics in there, I tell you. To tell you the truth, I’ve never really listened to the entire CD, mainly because I catch on to trends FAR after they’ve passed. It’s not that I try to miss them or anything. I think my tastes are just slow to mature. Anyway, there is one wicked song in there— I think it’s track #7 or 8, but the lyrics go: “you can get the powah, you can get the monay, but just remembah: the last owah.” (owah = hour.) I don’t know if it’s the lyrics or the music, but it’s a sweet song.

Also, a couple of my Nirvana CDs have dug themselves back up to the surface, as well. By far, my favorite song is ‘Dumb.’ It’s so short that I have to repeat it like 10 times to have enough.

My Musical Confession (you bastards should do one, as well)
I was in India most of the 80s & was still Indian in the mind until the early-mid-90s (meaning I listened to no music & spoke fobby English) UNTIL, that is, I signed up to Columbia House one day in the 7th grade w/ one of my friends. I don’t remember if my friend made me sign up or if we both signed together, but I know for sure that Columbia House was the service. That’s when I ordered my first batch of free music (for a penny). I ordered the music not to listen to, but to get the new CDs, rig them w/ the proper store tags & exchange them at a Wherehouse Music store close to my house (my chivalry was a result of having no money, damn it!). Why in the world would we order music & not listen to it? My friend & I exchanged credits we obtained (we got fully refunded, baby) and rented free video games (mainly Genesis & occasionally rented the Super Nintendo system ($20!) only to play Street Fighter II). I was a nerd, alright. A fucking nerd!

Aah, Tower records. Who cares if they weren't the shrewdest of pricers...

They have some nice posters, though. Always the newest divas dressed up in the skimpiest of bathing suits.

Oh yeah, they also have a massive porno section (the one in Davis at least does/did).

This comment officially starts off my 2 month counter for quitting.

Favorite Cover Girls songs....

1) Show me

2) Because of You

3) Promise Me

4) We Can't Go Wrong

5) My Heart Skips A Beat

...YOU KNOW!!!!

I remember the first two CD I ever bought.

Bel Biv Devoe- WBBD Bootcity! The Remix Album...I bought it at Jelly's in Pearl Kai Shopping Center. Word to the Mutha was the cut y'all heard!!!

Kriss Kross - Totally Krossed Out...I bought it at Costco because at that time if you could get a CD for $11.99 that was considered cheap and I remember Costco always had the CDs for a little cheaper than Tower Records..

I remember Towers had the regular price, like $15.99 or $17.99 but always had that second yellow sticker on it marking it down to $12.99 or $13.99... I swear it was just a marketing ploy to have us think we were getting a smokin deal.

....man, but if you get me started on cassette singles...damn, i wouldn't be able to tell you the first one i bought of those. Again I can remember going to Towers to look at the top 100 and it was like $2.99 each or 2 for $5.00. Don't you remember when CD singles were like $5.99 or $6.99 then all of sudden they became as cheap as the cassette singles!??!! Dude, that was some messed up stuff...

I wish I had some spectacular story of making And One videos to Snoop Dog and Warren G. Sigh.

I'm really glad you brought up the subject of music. I believe music has gotten me through all the bad times in my life. (Which by the way seem really pointless after I watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom yesterday. Those poor Indian children working in the mines!) But my first exposure to music was through my brother. At the age of 15 (me being 8) he started his own djing company, as I am sure many young Asian boys do. It was then I was surrounded by High Energy and Rap all day long. The hours he put into practicing!!! Constant Cover Girls and 2 Live Crew blaring in my ear drums. Ahhhh. Good times. The first Rap song I ever learned (which by the way, my brother made me memorize and repeat over and over again till it was engrained in my brain) was "Colors" by Ice T. Yes, I still remember the first and second verses. It actually amazes people when I bust it out.

There are many musical memories that I can share. All my memories are connected to music. But by far the one that has most changed my life is that one day ... I was watching MTV. I think I was a lowly 8th grader. Low and behold it was one the the sickest songs and videos I had ever seen! The video was all temperature sensitive and the beat was just insane. "So What cha want" by the Beastie Boys changed my life forever. I've never been the same since. And although you may hear this from many, I am the BIGGEST BEASTIE BOYS fan you will EVER KNOW!!!!! (Moe I think you should come out to the west coast the weekend of Sept 16th so we can go to the B-Boys concert. It will be a blast!). That was the best music moment ever.
