Nationality is NOT necessarily the country "you're born in"- most often people use it to denote their ancestry. Most people filling out the census here ARE AMERICANS by nationality- so that whole "tracking immigrants" argument is ridiculous. How many African Americans were born in Africa, let alone have seen it? Or someone who considers themself Asian American? Does this mean they were born in Asia? The census records RACE, THAT IS WHY hispanics are asked to specify, because they can be any race. This is why some people were initially opposed to adding "mixed" race to the census years ago; it's harder to categorize people that way.

Puerto Ricans consider themselves a "race" but we all know that they are really a conglomerate, admixture of different races (black, spanish, Indian). But please don't preach that whole "I'm hispanic by race argument"- because if that was the case- if they really were one big unified group- why do they all go to major ends to specify exactly what they are? Case in Point: try calling a Mexican a Rican or vice versa. Or call a Cuban a Columbian. If they are all apart of the same race, why does the distinction matter? Same Nationality, that's the extent of sameness. I went to school with a girl from Panama. she was obviously a black girl with African ancestry. Sure, Panama was her culture and Spanish her language. But the first thing people thought when they saw her was that she was a "black" girl. She got very tired of explaining, "no, I'm not black, I'm a Latina!" Sometimes people didn't believe her until she spoke fluent Spanish in front of them. My point is that race is defined by arbitrary physical characteristics that place you into a racial group.

Hispanics can be ALL different races, but it is NOT a race in itself.

Hispanic is NOT a race. It is a nationality, united by a common language. For example, are Shakira, Sammy Sosa, Celia Cruz, and Jennifer Lopez the same race? NO. But they are all Hispanic peoples. J-Lo is Rican by race, Sosa and Cruz are obviously black Latinos. They are not all the same race, that is obvious by looking at them.

That is why on the census if you check Hispanic, there's a place asking you to specify (Mexican, South American, etc). Hero's right about this one.

Depending on who was the conquering army - Spain, Portugual and any other latin race (Brazil too) can be dark or light. FYI - as a rule, it is the "royal" latin that is blonde hair and blue-eyed! I have both the dark and light and that is where the blue eyes, and famous hazel-green eyes come from. So get off it already.

So as you can see, just cause someone is half of a certain type of race doesn't mean that they are going to look it.
