Review: “Shameless” - Season 1

I finally finished watching all the DVR’d episodes from the past few weeks of Showtime’s hit new series “Shameless.” For those of you who don’t know, the series is based on the award-winning British series of the same name. The US version, which is set in Chicago’s tragic South Side, stars William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Justin Chatwin & a long list of highly talent young stars.

To sum it up in just one word: “Wow!” For those of you who didn’t bother keeping up this season, hit up Showtime on-demand to watch the entire season in one full swoop (watch the season premiere here)! I’m not kidding b/c the series has that unique addictive feature that all great things in life possess. You’ll watch three or four episodes without realizing it, so be careful.

I won’t go too deep into the drama b/c you can discover that for yourself, but the show successfully explores all the bullshit that a poor, WHITE family living in modern America suffers through in order to survive. Not to downplay any of the suffering, but I’m pretty sure this show would be very different if a (poor) black family in Chicago’s South Side took center stage.

As I said before, the cast is absolutely amazing. William H. Macy is seriously playing the role of a lifetime as the douche bag, alcoholic father of six, so definitely look for him to bag a lot of trophies next award season. As for the beautiful Emmy Rossum, she’s simply icing on the cake! I didn’t realize she was such a great actress, but I hope this role leads to huge projects in the future!

Congrats to the “Shameless” cast & crew for seriously killing it! I can’t wait for the second season!! OW!

I love this show so far! Emmy looks so beautiful even tho they dress her down a lot. Lip's girlfriend is hot too, as well as Ian's friend that likes to put on crazy amounts of black eyeliner.

While I enjoyed the series i'd argue that Willam H Macy was the only character out of the bunch that I felt was kind of a letdown. Cant really point a finger at why but its probably just how well the english frank carried the show in the 1st 2 uk seasons left to much to live up to. Im also happy that since the 1st episode which was shot for shot identicle to the uk version that they mixed up a couple of the subplot stories to keep it interesting for an english viewer. If the US keep the show running long enough and keep so close to the original stories as in the 1st series then come seasons 3/4/5 were all in for a treat as it really does just keep getting better

The season finale was pretty great. Although I did want Fiona to go away with Steve, but it was pretty obvious the family was too much of a priority to her. The cop who's obsessed with Fiona is straight up irritating. Pretty much everything that comes out of Frank's mouth is gold, and pretty much everything underneath Emmy Rossum's shirt is platinum.

The British one is grittier. A lot less polished than the American version but that is what's so great about it. It's definitely out on DVD, it premièred here in 2004 and it's still going.

I loved The Office but I actually really like the US version too.

You need to watch An Idiot Abroad if you liked The Office, Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais created it with Karl Pilkington, it's classic.

I'm looking forward to checking that out. It's probably out on DVD now, huh?

I'm a huge fan of the original office series, so I won't be surprised if the British one is better.

I've watched one episode, it wasn't bad but not as good as the original British version but maybe that is because I'm British and our version may not translate too well to an American audience as they don't really have experience of the social divisions here.
