Inside the Tube - The Office - “Lotto” (Season 8, Episode 3)

If you caught last night’s episode of The Office, you might have wondered the same thing I was left pondering: are television writers from different shows consorting to push the dream of winning lotto millions on an American public worn by a limp economy? If you caught the season premiere episode of Family Guy you will recall it too featured the Griffins in a post-lotto-winning episode where money became the source of all misery. Needless to say, it didn’t end well . . . because the Griffins were left back where they started.

A similar thing happens to Daryl (finally being used properly by the show’s writers) when his former colleagues at Dunder Mifflin’s warehouse win a collective $950,000. Daryl, of course, has long since been promoted “up” to the corporate digs with Jim & Pam & Co. where he has his own office and landline, so he’s left out of the winnings. For whatever reason, this sends Daryl into a downward tizzy where he sulks and scowls his way through a rare emotional upheaval.

Andy does his best to de-funk Daryl, which has mixed results, since it turns out that Daryl is really upset because life hasn’t turned out the way he wanted it to (“Who gets a soy allergy at age 35?!”) . . . and so it is revealed that what he really wants is Andy’s job. Yup, he wants to be the big boss, not another cog in the whiffling machine that is Dunder Mifflin. Is he about to Duncan the Nard Dawg??!

He ends up saving the day (sort of) when Jim, Dwight and Erin do their abject best to compensate for the now gone warehouse crew that quit after winning the lotto. Their solution is to come up with a paper loading system called Senor Loadenstein (essentially Erin kneeling on skates while she wears a helmet and loads paper on the delivery truck). Why is it called that?

Jim: “Porque es muy rapido.”

Overall, a solidly funny episode that gave us insight into one of the background characters we always want to see more of. Season 8 has been a surprising return to form for what was once television’s darling. Maybe they just need John Krasinski to direct more episodes?
