Inside the Tube - The Office Edition - “Spooked” (Season 8, Episode 5)

So this week’s episode of NBC’s once-upon-a-lineup cornerstone comedy did what the show has never done before: make Erin the receptionist the star of the episode. Depending upon your taste for Ellie Kemper’s unique brand of “weird cute” (or is it “cute weird”?), the episode was either thoroughly enjoyable or a massive letdown.

Admission: I think Kemper is a great talent and is too often underutilized by the show’s writers. Her primary function at Dunder Mifflin thus far has been to 1) serve as Andy Bernard’s love interest/foil, and 2) to offer what is often times the most bizarre depiction of femininity in all of its modern day cubicle glory. Pam is the female lead of the show, Angela its runner-up (or at least she used to be), Phyllis its quiet center of unspoken naughtiness and Kelly is, well, the eternal teenager whose entire value system can be found in the pages of Teen People (or the daily posts of MoeJackson). Meredith (like Creed) is an entity whose behavior defies categorization, so I shall leave her out of this.

Most sitcoms revel in holiday episodes: the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day episodes of every major sitcom are big time events, usually reserved for sweeps and hyped to audiences with the potential for never-before-written-comedy-and-laughter.

“Spooked” didn’t quite get to that level of jocularity, but it did use Erin quite well, if nothing else. When she is charged by Andy with organizing Dunder Mifflin’s annual Halloween bash, she quickly tries to revamp her creation by making it more adult for the liking of Robert California’s brutish twat of a son. Of course, things don’t go as she had hoped and it ends in disaster. The bit about the “cinema of the unsettling” (courtesy her ex, Gabe) was a brilliant stroke in my opinion, though it was hard to watch . . .

Personally, I found this episode of The Office to be a brave new attempt to do something it hadn’t done before: to tell the story of Dunder Mifflin from the eyes of Erin, who is clearly on the track to having some kind of showdown with Andy. Plus, the costumes were awesome, notably Creed as Bin Laden and Dwight as Kerrigan from Starcraft.

The Andy-Erin storyline has kind of petered out lately, most likely since the show’s writers know that any attempt to one-up the fabled Pam-and-Jim love story is a fool’s errand. They won’t be able to do that because, unlike Pam and Jim, Erin and Andy are not real people: they are caricatures of office behavior we’ve all encountered.

But, hey, even weirdos need to fall in love, right?

Leonardo DiCaprio Spotted With Romanian-Hottie Madalina Ghenea in Sydney

Photo Credit: WENN; Center photo (not from WENN) is from a lingerie shoot.

As some of you might know, the Hollywood big-dogg is currently shooting his latest film “The Great Gatsby” in Sydney and in an attempt to keep things cozy, he rented a bachelor pad (i.e. in Planet Leo, that translates to 10,000+ sqft mansion). The pair were recently spotted at the mansion and we’re assuming it wasn’t just for drinks. He’s reportedly using Madalina Ghenea’s body to seek refuge from the insane amounts of stress caused by an extremely demanding shooting schedule. As you guys know, Blake’s too busy with her career to become Leo’s Traveling Sex Toy & Bar is his Backup Booty that he hits only when no other options remain (BASSSTAAAARDDDD!!).

These lingerie pics are apparently the same chick, but I’m having a difficult time seeing it. We’re assuming the Romanian-born model & actress Madalina Ghenea was much younger when those were taken or maybe they used a ton of makeup & airbrushing to decrease the size of her lips? Regardless of what’s going on with the lips, what we know for sure is that Leo is having lots of fun them.

2011 NFL Season: Week 8 Preview

Lingering comments, questions and concerns from week 7

-Oh yes, it’s everyone’s favorite topic of the week: Tim Tebow! I usually try to keep my opinion neutral when it comes to Tebow but it’s hard to deny the magic that does on the field. The question is: What do you take more from? The first three quarters of horrendous quarterbacking (is that a word?) OR do you just go with the final minutes where he somehow led his team to a miraculous comeback? I’ll be more of a realist and say that the Dolphins pretty much took themselves out of that game.

-How about that absolute BEAT DOWN the Saints gave the Colts? I think you could tell the game was over after the first snap. Quick question: If the Saints and Rams face on a neutral field, who wins? I’d probably lean Colts on that one. At least the Colts can somewhat score. The Rams are one of five teams this season that haven’t scored 100 points yet. That’s pretty bad.

-Am I the only one that saw the Carson Palmer trade being a disaster? Ok he might eventually establish some offensive rhythm and it wasn’t his fault he was thrown into a game after being on a team for 72 hours. Speaking of the AFC west, who knew that this week’s Chargers-Chiefs game would be for the division lead? I thought the Chiefs were done after those injuries they suffered earlier this season. Consider myself proven wrong.

Games get better as the day goes on this week:

Sunday 10/30
1:00 ET
Colts AT Titans (-8.5)
Jaguars AT Texans (-9)
Vikings AT Panthers (-3.5)
Saints (-13.5) AT Rams
Cardinals AT Ravens (-12.5)
Dolphins AT Giants (-9.5)

4:15 ET
Redskins AT Bills (-5.5) *In Harry’s hood Toronto
Lions (-3) AT Broncos
Patriots (-3) AT Steelers
Browns AT 49ers (-8.5)
Bengals (-3) AT Seahawks

8:30 ET
Cowboys AT Eagles (-3)

Monday 10/31 Happy Halloween!
8:35 ET
Chargers (-4) AT Chiefs

*Teams in their BYE week: Atlanta, Chicago, Green Bay, Oakland, NY Jets and Tampa Bay

Game of the week
-New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers-
Has there ever been a more obvious choice for game of the week? Tom Brady has made himself VERY comfortable going into Pittsburgh. He’s gone 6-1 overall in Heinz field; including winning his last four visits. Normally I’d favor the Patriots pretty easily for that reason alone BUT this season the Steelers’ pass defense has been superb, only allowing just over 170 yards/game. The Steelers defense is going to need to keep Brady and his weapons limited in order for Roethlisberger and his weapons to keep up. I’m leaning Patriots but I think this game is going to live up to the hype.

Upset pick of the week
-Minnesota Vikings over Carolina Panthers-
I thought the Vikings looked good last week and caught the Packers by surprise. Adrian Peterson looks like he’s getting into his best running back form and the Panthers have a terrible run defense. The Panthers have an explosive offense but I think if the Vikings can establish Peterson’s running game early, then they can limit the time Cam Newton is on the field. The Vikings have a solid running defense that can slow down the Panthers’ combo of Williams and Stewart. I like the Vikings to surprise some people this weekend.

Close call of the week
-Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles-
I haven’t been this excited for a football game in a LONG time. I dislike all NFC East teams equally but for some reason I love when my Cowboys visit the Eagles on a Sunday night. The Eagles have been perfect after their bye week under Andy Reid and the Cowboys are looking to keep momentum going after last week’s dominating win over the Rams. The Cowboys have the league’s best running defense but the Eagles running game isn’t very conventional with McCoy and Vick. I think whichever team limits the other team’s big plays wins the game.

STONE COLD Steve Austin LOCK of the week
-New Orleans Saints over St. Louis Rams-
Did you see what the Saints did to the Colts last Sunday night? Yes, they scored 62 points and now they’re going against a team that hasn’t scored 62 all season. I don’t think it’s going to be THAT bad but I have no reason to believe that the Rams aren’t terrible. The Saints have keep establishing themselves as an elite NFC teams with another dominating win over an inferior opponent. I just hope they aren’t looking ahead to next week’s revenge game against the Bucs. Oh yeah, I’m also picking on a St. Louis team because of what happened last night in the World Series. Go Rangers.

Rose McGowan was last in theaters for Conan The Barbarian and stars in Rosewood Lane, which doesn’t have a release date yet. Also, she recently started filming for The Tell Tale Heart in New Orleans alongside Patrick John Flueger and Peter Bogdanovich. The film is an adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story. There really isn’t much else info on this movie but to keep up to date, they do have an official Facebook page for fans to follow.

The Rum Diary: Film Review

Check “The Rum Diary” official website for more info!

Your opinion of The Rum Diary will largely hinge, I believe, on your opinion of the man whose life story is the basis of the movie’s plot: journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, a man who was uniquely American and still anything but what one thinks of as the quintessential 1960s American man (of course, quintessence is a difficult thing to put one’s finger on, but that’s a separate discussion).

The film’s story is not precisely based on Thompson’s life, but rather inspired by certain events he experienced in Puerto Rico in the 1960s. It also helps to know that the film was made solely because its star, Johnny Depp, has an abiding affinity for Thompson and is primarily responsible for the publication of the novel itself. For Depp and his brethren, Thompson territory is hallowed territory.

Which is why you might come out of the film thinking it’s been handled with almost too much reverence. Any film inspired by real people and real events succeeds only when the story is willing to look in all the crevices and secret corners, and fully illuminates the subject in all of its glory and gruesomeness. Rum Diary falls short in the respect, painting a surprisingly one dimensional portrait of a man whose larger-than-life qualities are magnified and whose shortcomings are transferred onto other characters (in this instance, Sanderson, played by Aaron Eckhart).

Yes, the old adage says, “Print the legend, not the history,” but here we have a legend that doesn’t seem to be sure itself of its own history. The same cannot be said of Terry Gilliam’s 1988 feature, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, also based on Thompson’s writings and starring Johnny Depp.

The story goes like this: Paul Kemp (Depp) is bored with the conventions of Eisenhower era America and decides to take his writing prowess to San Juan where he begins to write for a local paper. Soon, he falls in with Sala (Michael Rispoli) and begins to enjoy life as a professional ingester of rum. He is also hired by dastardly American developer Sanderson (Eckhart) whose greatest ambition is to transform Puerto Rico into a tourist haven for wealthy Americans. Kemp, naturally, falls for Sanderson’s beautiful lady companion, Chenault, played by Amber Heard.

Charged with painting a glowing picture of Sanderson’s visions with his words, Kemp is soon faced with the dilemma of how he wishes to utilize the power of his pen/typewriter: to perpetuate the blind greed of a capitalist or to challenge what most would term a foreign and unwelcome attempt at the 20th century version of Manifest Destiny? No prizes for guessing how it ends.

For fans of Thompson’s writing, the film may suffice as a jolly joyride through his early years as a writer. Fans of Depp, however, may find themselves remiss by how much his attempts to be zany and wild (and free of convention) ends up feeling like Captain Jack Comes to Puerto Rico. While far from disappointing, there is simply too much Jack Sparrow in Depp’s incarnation of Thompson. Still, it’s worth a peek.

Photo Shoot Matchup: “In Time” Stars Amanda Seyfried & Olivia Wilde

Own the rights to these photos? Please contact us immediately. All rights owned by respective magazines & photographers.

As you guys know, among all huge releases hitting theaters today, the beautiful duo Olivia Wilde & Amanda Seyfried star in the sci-fi triller “In Time,” which also stars Justin Timberlake. Amanda plays J.T.’s love interest & Olivia is his mom—makes more sense after you read the film’s premise. It’s getting favorable reviews, but with so many frickin’ films out there right now, it’s very difficult to decide which one is worth the $22 (popcorn, film, drink)!

Anyway, in celebration of their new film, we grabbed photo shoots of each chick & put them head to head. As you browse through, it becomes apparent very quickly that Olivia Wilde is extremely comfortable wearing next nothing in front of cameras, while on the other hand, Amanda Seyfried surprisingly doesn’t really do many scandalous shoots. I point that out only because Olivia doesn’t come off as your typical skanky star, but from the looks of the pics, short of straight-up nudity, the sexy “Tron” star will do whatever it takes to make the photographer happy.
