Both the Democrats and Republicans are owned by Wall Street. Once retired, a great majority of government officials go into the private sector and find jobs with the large corporations they did favors for when they were supposed to be working on the behalf of the public. I don't support this misguided bill, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's passed.
There are still copyright laws which allow fair use and unless this overrides that, there will be conflicts.

It's really about control of the internet as a whole. As it is written, you would essentially be handing all control to corporations and the government. It's way worse than censorship like in China or some other countries.
Imagine for example, Bowser posts some non flattering pictures of Kim Kardashian. These pictures are technically owned by someone else. Bowser didn't get authorization by the picture owner to post them. Kim sends a complaint to the government. The government can shut down Moe Jackson to the United States without a court notice or appeal, even though he had no idea that the picture is there, only that it is on his site without approval. Worse, now let's say Kimmy K extorts/blackmails Moe into only posting her stuff.
This would doom anything that had user generated content. Passing things for safety is one thing, but imagine your internet life without being able to share anything.

If you're wondering about tomorrow, Google, Yahoo, ebay, Twitter, and Facebook will all be doing something as a SOPA protest. Wikipedia, Craigslist, Reddit, and the entire icanhazcheezburgers network among others will all be down tomorrow.
I don't fully understand these protest. Google and its lobbyist and the other big firms are deciding to show us, the ones who will suffer either way what it will be like without them. Kind of a d--- move no matter what the site.
I get it will force many to be educated, but in all seriousness, they don't care what the hell the people say. Either way congress will get paid, reword the bill and pass it. They did it with that military bill which allows us all to be detained at whim, and they will with this.
