Before the Giants got close to being in the World Series they faced elimination multiple times but it was that same perseverance that helped them have so much momentum once they actually faced the Tigers. It was extremely evident from the start of the series when the Giants were able to hit Verlander (best pitcher in baseball) seemingly at will during Game 1 of the series. It all came together for the Giants last night, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-3 and completing series sweep to win their 2nd World Series in three seasons; Pablo Sandoval was named the MVP. Nicknamed “Kung Fu Panda”, Sandoval batted .500 in the series, including an incredible three-home run performance in Game 1. There were plenty of things that went the Giants way (balls bouncing their way or maybe a call here and there) but when your team is going to win a championship, things have to go in your favor. That’s sports. It wasn’t the reason they won the championship though because the Giants did the right things at the most critical points in the game.
When you have a combination of clutch hits, good pitching moves and effective fielding (you know, the exact reasons my Rangers collapsed) the result will always be great. Correct me if i’m wrong but I believe the Giants went through something like 6 different elimination games, winning them all. That happens when your team has chemistry, each player trusting the next knowing that they will never give up despite the circumstances. For the Tigers it was simply a lack of production at the plate. Even with Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera on their roster the Tigers batting average was abysmal (as a team they only hit .159) and that big hit to swing the momentum never came. Well, it sort of came last night during the 3rd with a Cabrera HR but a couple of innings late the Giants responded. Eventually some smart play by the Giants drove them to score the go-ahead run in the 10th inning. From there closer Sergio Romo struck out the side (a guy named Romo being clutch? Yes, i’m still bitter about yesterday’s loss which I attended) and it was on to celebrate.
Congratulations Bryan, your Giants are the new kings of baseball. Celebrate accordingly.
