Say what you want about who won last night (Anne Hathaway: yes! Jessica Chastain: eh…), the big winner of the official kick-off to Hollywood’s award season was the Golden Globes themselves. And the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has no one to thank other than its wisely chosen hostesses of ceremonies, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
For once, the show seemed to hit exactly the right note with (Chevy “Women Aren’t Funny” Chase should be clutching his chest right now) female comedians who were at once smart, witty, silly, and full of hilarious reverie for the stars in the room. Though the Goddess of All Things Cinematic Meryl Streep was not able to attend (Poehler: “Meryl has the flu. And we hear she is amazing in it!”), Fey and Poehler were able to extract big laughs from lesser names like James Franco, Quentin Tarantino, and James Cameron, as well as some of the evening’s big winners like Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway, and Lena Dunham.
Check out the video of the opening monologue to see just how on point the two hosts were. And hopefully the Globes will have the good sense to invite them back next year.
