Getaway: Film Review

I didn’t think it was possible for a movie to get an aggregate “0%” score over at RottenTomatoes that didn’t star Adam Sandler, but Selena Gomez has proven me wrong. Woefully, epically wrong.

Getaway is one of those movies that on paper sounds like it should be a decent go at the movies: a mysterious voice tells a devoted husband in a car that his wife has been kidnapped and will be killed if he doesn’t do exactly as The Voice commands. A psychological game of torture ensues and the only one who seems to be able to help him out is a hacker known only as The Kid and played by Selena Gomez. Can he trust her? Can she help him out at all? And worse yet, is she in on the game too?

The answers to these questions are obvious about 12 minutes into the movie, a movie which dispenses with all tension, suspense and surprise in order to put on some slick car chase scenes. Neither Ethan Hawke nor Selena Gomez seem interested in doing anything other than unbuckling their seatbelts so they can slam on the brakes and then lunge forward . . . because that’s what movies are nowadays? Not so much a sequence of scenes with a plot and characters, but a frenetic mess of choreographed CGI accidents.

Except with this one, you’ll only want to look away. Arguably the worst movie of the summer (that doesn’t star Adam Sandler).
