And The Biggest Flop of 2013 Is . . .

“Despite the absence of a colossal failure such as last year’s Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure (never forget), this year was loaded with features that failed to drum-up ticket sales.”[HuffPo]

Yup, it’s that time of year: to name the “Best Of” and “Worst Of” 2013 lists. And even though we feel a teeny tiny bit guilty at watching big movies go BOOM, go boom some of them must.

Any guesses as to which is the lowest grossing film of the year? It’s not what you’re thinking (The Long Ranger still has a chance to kind of break even (sort of)) but here’s a hint: it stars Ed Harris.

Others on the Flop List include Liam Hemsowrth’s Paranoia (HUGE disaster) and Movie 43, probably the worst reviewed film of the last 10 years.

Trailer Watch: Van Damme in “Welcome to the Jungle”

Move over, Maggie Smith: the most in-demand actor of the year is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who appears in yet another feature in Welcome to the Jungle.

The story sounds akin to Lord of the Flies with adults: a corporate retreat goes horribly awry – in the jungle. Imagine that.

Welcome to the Jungle releases February 7 in theaters and on VOD.

Trailer Watch: Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises”

The world’s most beloved animation auteur Hayao Miyazaki returns with The Wind Rises, an animated adventure in the Miyazaki tradition that already has awards buzz all around it (and the trailer just released!).

Telling the story of Jiro Horikoshi, the (in)famous designer of Japan’s fighter planes during WWII, The Wind Rises is Miyazaki’s last film as director and will release in limited theatres on February 21, 2014.

Homefront: Film Review

Ever wondered what Breaking Bad would be like if James Franco played Walter White?

No? Neither have I, but apparently someone who greenlit Homefront did because that’s basically what the movie is about. James Franco saw a role he really liked (Walter White). And so this movie came to be. And that’s it.

There’s really no other way to explain this occasionally watchable but mostly godawful movie in which Jason Statham stars as an ex-DEA agent whose wife has died and left him with a young daughter to raise. He wants to leave the violence behind and live a quiet life in a small town where he and his daughter can enjoy the pleasures of (as Sarah Palin famously called it) “the REAL America”.

They move, and there they soon discover the town is run by an unlikely druglord named Gator (Franco). Yes, Gator. You can pretty much guess where this is going so I’ll stop the plot summary right here.

Strictly for fans of Franco and Statham. And anyone who wants to see a rehash of every Stallone movie from the early 80s.
