I will try (repeat: try) to be as objective as possible about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As a critic in an industry where superhero films are produced at higher speeds than the earth produces nitrogen, it has become a pitiless chore to sit through yet another superhero franchise movie. As such, it can be admittedly difficult to go in with an open mind. So, sorry, fan boys (and girls).
That being said, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is pleasantly refreshing. An obvious attempt to out-iron man Iron Man, the film has tons of lighthearted moments that keep the action fresh and from feeling labored (watch out for that disc). Some who saw the film with me found its mix of dark scenes with humor more than a bit jarring (it does get cartoony at times . . . but it’s based on a comic book, for Christ’s sake!)
The most surprising thing about the film is that it’s directed by a brother duo best known for their work on Arrested Development, about as far a reach from the cold heroism that permeates this movie. But the duo does justice to its story (kinda rickety at first, but then things begin to chug along smoothly, especially when Scarlett Johansson shows up). For those who have tired of a genre whose only purpose seems to be to spawn further and further franchise movie heroes, Captain America: Winter Soldier is, while predictable and formulaic, enjoyable for those willing to forgive its adherence to the mandates of modern movie superherodom.

Which is what Season Four of HBO’s mega-super-blockbuster hit Game of Thrones is all about. And with the season premiere about to bow this Sunday on HBO, the first official review from The Hollywood Reporter has us salivating in anticipation (hint: it’s a rave).
A sampling: “It’s incredibly impressive . . . The first three episodes are predictably spot-on – action-packed, terrific scenes full of searing dialogue bumping up against others where volumes are spoken with facial features or silence. The consistent excellence in Game of Thrones is truly something to behold.”
Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace co-star opposite James Gandolfini in what is billed as his “real” last film, The Drop. Hardy stars as a bartender who is used by his mobster cousin (Gandolfini) to smuggle cash to the underworld. A robbery gone terribly awry leaves the bartender at the center of a mess that reveals how his entire network of friends and family are involved in the shady underworld . . . leaving him to wonder if he’ll ever get our or survive.
Hard to believe it’s been almost five years since Brittany Murphy died, but the late star lives on in the upcoming thriller feature Something Wicked.
Murphy stars as a psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with a couple’s marital dysfunction and tries to determine what sinister forces are driving them toward the edge of irreconcilable differences. Of course, she ends up getting involved in the madness more than she would like.
Something Wicked opens in limited release on April 4.
