Doping Superstar Maria Sharapova Is Today’s Parking Lot Catwalker

EXCLUSIVE: Just another day for Maria Sharapova as she is spotted at an LA gym just a day after her tennis suspension and being dropped by sponsors over her failed drug testPhoto Credit: FameFlynet Pictures

UPDATE: OOPS! Looks like Nike kicked Sharapova to the curb, as well.

The fact that the drug was outlawed on January 1, 2016 makes it seem like bad luck for tennis star Maria Sharapova, but in light of the recent drama, the Latvian company responsible for manufacturing meldonium states that the normal treatment time for the drug is four to six weeks—NOT 10 YEARS!!!

So with that in hand, I’ll have to change my earlier assessment on the situation and conclude that Maria Sharapova was obviously using the drug because it was giving her an edge in her training and performance on the court. For those of you still wondering what this drug does for an athlete, Quartz has a nice explanation:

It is primarily used to treat people with heart conditions that affect the blood’s ability to deliver oxygen to the body. As it happens, oxygen delivery is key to an athlete’s performance, too.

Here’s what Meldonium does:

It reduces the amount of oxygen needed to keep tissues alive by changing the way muscle cells metabolize various substances in the blood. Typically, long-chain fatty acids enter cell mitochondria, which is where the metabolic process occurs. Meldonium blocks this action, instead sending carbohydrates to the mitochondria.

Metabolizing carbs requires less oxygen than metabolizing fatty acids, so giving the mitochondria carbs instead of fatty acids can keep cells alive when there’s not enough oxygen in the blood. This can save lives when poor circulation reduces blood supply and oxygen to tissues. For the same reason, reducing the need for oxygen can enhance athletic performance.

These latest photos of Sharapova were snapped earlier this afternoon as she hit up an L.A. gym just a day after she announcing her suspension. Within 24 hours of the announcement, Sharapova was dropped by three big sponsors, Nike, Swiss watch brand Tag Heuer and Porsche.

I 100% guarantee you that Serena would not have been suspended for this.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with athletes using meldonium. It shouldn't be classified as a doping drug in a first place. Next will be what, green tea? Stupid.

Hopefully she saved up her winnings. She will get by nicely I expect.

Possibly she's attempting to cover up the fact that she's had open heart surgery along with a lung being removed and some complications later.

Or then again she just likes the money when she wins & didn't expect to get caught. ; )

Beautiful, talented tennis player.

I hope she is not suspended for long. Nobody wants to watch Manrena or his brother Penus play.

@James Do you really watch her play? Because her shrieks are fucking annoying.

It will be interesting to see who else gets caught in this. I noticed many of the women in pro tennis looked more bulked up in recent years perhaps trying to become as strong as the Williams sisters. I sort of miss the days of Chris Evert and Tracy Austin. That said, Sharapova still has great legs, and some of her matches sounded like lesbian porn.

@FuzzyBear There's no controversy, just some mundane prescription medication that on 1/1/16 was added to the banned list, on the memo it had a different name than appears on her prescription so she and her team missed it. Nothing to see here.

@McP @FuzzyBear i agree. it is more of a supplement used to increase energy and metabolism. She said she's been taking it for 10 years, but didn't notice it had been added to the banned list a month earlier. Now she'll be banned for 3-4 years and will be past her prime when she gets reinstated. Stupid rule.

I think it's stupid that professional athletes are restricted as to what they can or cannot put into their bodies. I'm sure they are all trying to gain a competitive edge with some type of performance enhancing drug. I really don't have a problem with it.

On to a more serious topic, I love her legs!

I think she should use the extra time to improve herself and specifically her sexual performance. A woman with those athletic legs and vocal cords that she uses so well on the tennis courts should transfer into a phenomenal lover in the bedroom. The fact that a former lover said she was a dead frog in bed is not acceptable. Come on Maria, step up your game.

All the grunting during her games annoyed the hell out of me, so this probably a good thing.
