The 20 Biggest Box Office Blockbusters of 2012

Avengers is the No. 3 film of all time behind Avatar ($2.8 billion) and Titanic ($2.2 billion), both from James Cameron.[THR]

What do Batman, Bilbo Baggins, and a red-headed Pixar princess have in common? They have all grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the global box-office in the year that was 2012, though none of them quite as much as the mega epic hugely gargantuan blockbuster that was Disney’s The Avengers. Now the third highest grossing film of all-time, The Avengers assures audiences that superhero movies will be a regular feature of American moviegoing life. Just like action movies starring a secretly anti-semitic Mel Gibson in the 80s and romantic comedies starring Meg Ryan were in the 90s.

The top grossing movies of the year include (in no praticular order) Skyfall, Brave, The Hobbit, Madagascar 3, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hunger Games and, of course, The Dark Knight Rises. Somehow (and I’m not sure how) the fourth Ice Age also managed to worm its way into the top ten. Gasp: does this mean there will be a fifth?!? Dear gawd, let it be a straight to DVD release!
